Teriyaki Chicken and Rice Bowls FAQ’s

Can I Use Frozen Vegetablesin my Teriyaki Chicken Rice Bowl?

Yes, of course you can use frozen vegetables, just make sure to cook them before adding them to your teriyaki bowl. I actually prefer using frozen broccoli and steaming it in the microwave for 5-6 minutes. It’s much easier and I usually have packages of frozen stir-fry veggies in my freezer that also pair well with these teriyaki chicken rice bowls.

Can I Use Chicken Thighs for this Homemade Teriyaki Chicken?

Yes, chicken thighs are also a great option for this teriyaki chicken bowl. Cube chicken thighs and cook until brown and no longer pink. Chicken thighs take a few minutes longer to cook than chicken breasts, but they are very juicy.

Can I Use Grilled Chicken Instead Of Pan Frying for these Teriyaki Chicken Bowls?

Yes, you can grill your chicken instead of pan frying. Be sure to let your chicken rest before cutting into cubes to ensure it stays juicy. You can even use leftover chicken or a store-bought rotisserie chicken for this teriyaki chicken if you would like. They are all great options.

Can I Meal Prep Homemade Teriyaki Chicken?

Yes! I love to use this recipe as a meal prep for my husband and I throughout the week. It’s simple, delicious, and re-heats well. Simply prepare teriyaki chicken as instructed below. Divide chicken and broccoli into 4 meal prep containers, add 1/2 cup white or brown rice to each container. Drizzle extra teriyaki sauce if desired, sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions (optional) and refrigerate for up to 4 days.

How To Store Leftover Teriyaki Chicken

If you have any leftover teriyaki chicken and rice bowls, store the rice and vegetables in a separate container than the teriyaki chicken. Place them both in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 3 days. Storing the rice and veggies in a separate container will ensure that the rice doesn’t get soggy from the teriyaki sauce. To reheat your teriyaki chicken bowls, heat the chicken, rice, and vegetables all separately in the microwave until they are warm enough to eat, then put them together into a bowl.

Tips For Making Teriyaki Chicken Rice Bowls

  • The sesame oil is optional in this teriyaki chicken recipe. I’ve made it without, and it taste just as delicious. If you still want a hint of sesame, sprinkle sesame seeds on top of the bowl. This also adds a nice crunch!
  • Cut chicken into evenly bite size pieces to ensure even cooking. This will allow all the chicken to cook evenly without having overcooked pieces of chicken.
  • Allow oil to get hot in your skillet before adding your chicken. This will give your chicken a nice sear.
  • Be careful not to overcook the chicken. You don’t want it to dry out and become tough.
  • You can season your chicken with black pepper before browning, but I wouldn’t recommend adding salt. There is enough salt that comes from the soy sauce.
  • Feel free to add whatever veggies you prefer. Matchstick carrots, snap peas, zucchini, or bell peppers are great additions.

Lived on the Dole pineapple plantation in Hawaii many years. Teriyaki was a staple. I added a little hoisin sauce and added a little extra sesame oil along with a splash of hot sauce for just a little spice. I also sliced up some water chestnuts and added at the end for a little extra crunchy texture.
    Ono to da max

So simple and yummy. I served it with rice and green beans, plus I made a little extra sauce. Because teriyaki. I didn’t find the sauce too thick, but I also didn’t measure perfectly, just kinda eyeballed it. I actually wish I’d made it a liiiiittle thicker. I like that stuff stiiiicky. All in all, an easy, tasty, decently quick meal for the fam.

Wow! This dish was amazing! Definitely adding it to the rotation. The teriyaki sauce was to die for. I added a little chili garlic hot sauce and it was perfection!

Very delicious and easy to prepare. For my vegetable I added fresh green beans to the chicken mixture. I boiled the green beans first to get them tender crisp.

First time making Teriyaki, the finished dish was a success. My two year toddler and husband really enjoyed it. I also liked that the ingredients for the sauce where already in my pantry. This is a great low budget meal.
